„Memorial Trip Appearance and Reality“ in Dachau

As part of our project, which took place from 02.08. to 07.08.2021, 12 young participants took part in a memorial site trip that brought them closer to the crimes of National Socialism and the history of the persecution and extermination of people of the Jewish faith. The aim of the trip was to make the significance of these historical events impressively and emotionally comprehensible to the young people, in order to counteract antisemitic tendencies and to strengthen them in their democratic values.

Accompanied by a supervisor, the participants were guided through various memorial sites and historical locations by knowledgeable local guides. Particularly noteworthy is the interactive city tour on the theme of National Socialism in Munich, which was carried out in the form of a city rally or geocaching, in order to convey the topic in an engaging and active way.

The trip was documented by an accompanying travel diary, in which the participants collected their impressions, photos and reports. This digital diary was created at the end of the project, distributed to the participants and published on our homepage. The group was supported not only in terms of content, but also with empathy and an open ear for the individual concerns of the young people. Pre- and post-discussions as well as one-on-one conversations ensured a reflective and in-depth engagement with the themes of the journey. In addition to remembering the crimes of the NS regime and reflecting on the significance of democratic values, another aim of the trip was to encourage the participants. Based on the historical development from the end of the Second World War up to today's democratic society, the young people were to recognise that non-violent and collective protest, such as during the 1989 turnaround, can also pave the way to a free and livable society. We would like to sincerely thank the Landschaftsverband Westfalen Lippe (LWL), whose funding made the realisation of this valuable project possible for us.
